Nel febbraio del 1979 fu presentato nel corso di due conferenze stampa a Ivrea e a Milano il progetto di sonorizzazione del bosco di Monte Stella, una collina alla periferia di Ivrea. L’idea, affidata a John Cage e al tecnico del suono John Fullemann, consisteva nell’applicare microfoni, altoparlanti e altre apparecchiature alla vegetazione del bosco affinché i bambini del posto potessero ‘udire le piante’. Il progetto fu però rimandato più volte ed è tuttora rimasto irrealizzato.

Grazie ai promotori dell’iniziativa, Luciano Martinengo e Alfredo Tradardi, allora Assessore alla Cultura del Comune di Ivrea, che vorrei qui ringraziare pubblicamente, sono adesso disponibili alcuni materiali, tra cui una dettagliata spiegazione tecnica del progetto da parte di Cage e Fullemann, che ricostruiscono la vicenda del mancato evento.

In February 1979 during two press conferences in Ivrea and Milan the project of the sonorization of the wood on top of Monte Stella, a hilltop in the perifery of Ivrea, was presented. The idea, commissioned to John Cage and sound technician John Fullemann, consisted of the application of microphones, speakers and other equipment on the vegetation of the wood, so that the children visiting it could ‘hear the plants’. The project however was initially postponed and later never accomplished.

Thanks to the promoters of the initiative, Luciano Martinengo and Alfredo Tradardi, at that time Cultural Councilor of Ivrea, both of whom I would like to thank, now it is finally available a wealth of documents, including a detailed technical explanation of the project by Cage and Fullemann, that describe the story of the unrealized event.
